How Woman Abuse and Sexual Assault Staff Can Provide Mental Health-Informed and Addiction-Informed Services

  1. Ask women about mental health and addiction issues.
  2. Recognize the signs of mental health and addiction issues.
  3. Build rapport with a client so she feels comfortable disclosing regarding mental health and addiction issues.
  4. Provide supports so that women with mental health or addiction issues can safely access woman abuse/sexual assault services.
  5. Educate women about the connection between woman abuse / sexual assault / abuse-related trauma, click mental health and/or substance use.
  6. Provide information to normalize the responses to abuse and trauma, and about how normal responses get pathologized.
  7. Provide integrated/intersectoral programs through collaboration with mental health and addiction services.
  8. Act as a professional support for women struggling to work through difficult circumstances related to the mental health/addiction issues.
  9. Act as a link or bridge to other community services and supports such as mental health and addiction agencies.
