Our Mandate

The mandate of the Ontario Woman Abuse Screening Project is to collaborate across sectors to:

  • implement routine screening for woman abuse, viagra sexual assault and trauma in the mental health and addiction sectors;
  • provide cross-sectoral training;
  • implement woman abuse/sexual assault/trauma-informed services in the mental health and addiction sectors; and
  • provide integrated, health inter-sectoral services to abused women with concurrent mental health and/or addiction issues

More specifically, our goals are:

  • To plan and implement woman abuse/sexual assault/trauma screening in the mental health and addictions agencies and allied services;
  • To develop cross-sectoral collaboration between the woman abuse/sexual assault, mental health and addictions sectors and allied services;
  • To promote woman abuse/sexual assault/trauma-informed services within the mental health and addiction sectors and allied services;
  • To promote mental health and addictions-informed services in the woman abuse/sexual assault sector;
  • To develop and test a web-based/webinar/tele-learning model for supporting other regions in developing and implementing cross-sectoral collaboration, implementation of woman abuse/sexual assault/trauma screening, and woman abuse-informed/sexual assault-informed/trauma-informed services in the mental health and addictions sectors;
  • To collaborate and consult with women with lived experience and with community resources;
  • To initiate integrated and/or cross-sectoral services for abused women with concurrent mental health and/or addictions issues;
  • To develop a model of mentoring and supporting other agencies, sectors and regions to share learnings and ensure sustainability of the screening and initiatives;
  • To support implementation of screening and trauma-informed services involving at least seven additional regions of Ontario (beyond the four regions which were part of the pilot study) through tele-conferences and web-based learning. (Note: Twelve regions are involved with the project as of April 2012 with a 13th region scheduled to join in May 2012.);
  • To seek funding for the continued development of the initiative; and
  • To assess and evaluate the success of the implementation of the project.
